Last month on my Patreon I posted a set of family magic items, the Arms of Bahamut. These items are my take on what has been known in previous editions of D&D as “magic item sets.” Family magic items are treasures that increase in magical strength when brought together, though each is powerful on its own. These items are typically created in sets, but might be flung across the world or the multiverse, making each hunt for an item in a set an adventure. The collection of an entire family could be the central story of a campaign.

Not really an item set in the traditional sense, but neat nonetheless. My take on item sets is that they decrease the number of attunement “slots” required as more items are added to the set so that a lesser set would only take two slots and greater would take all three.
Alternately, I like the thread system of Earthdawn wherein a character can “attune” more than once to an item as they complete related quests and unlock its history. So a holy avenger might start as a +1 sword, but once multiple threads are attuned to the weapon it begins to grow to its full potential (and maybe beyond!). A character might have one thread per level plus CHA mod (min 1), so a high level character could thread to three or four powerful items or a dozen lesser ones.
